I thing the distinction must be done between personal and spiritual development. You have pointed very well that personal development is much more about creating boundaries, and spiritual development is more about freeng yourself from these boundaries. The former is about creating a healty ego, the latter is about transcending it. I think it is very important to realize that nobody can trancend without having a well organized ego! Yes, I agree.
